Wireless Networking Hardware

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is a wireless alternative to a Local Area Network (LAN) that uses radio instead of wires to transmit data back and forth between the computers in your offices, warehouse, or school. This gives users the mobility to move around within a broad coverage area and still be connected to the network.

The popularity of wireless LANs is primarily due to their convenience, cost efficiency, and ease of integration with other networks and network components. The majority of computers sold to consumers today come pre-equipped with all necessary wireless LAN technology. In our experience deploying WLAN's for clients, here are the major benefits they often report:

Access network resources from nearly any convenient location within their networking environment. With the increase in mobile devices around the office, this is particularly relevant.

Utilizing public wireless networks, users can access hosted applications such as CRM, ERP through the internet outside their normal work environment.

Employee's are more productive as his or her work can be accomplished from any convenient location. For example, a hospital or warehouse may implement Voice over WLAN applications that enable mobility and cost savings.

Initial setup of an infrastructure-based wireless network requires little more than a single access point.

Wireless networks can grow with your business without replacing equipment or requiring re-cabling.

Wireless networking hardware is at worst a modest increase from wired counterparts. This potentially increased cost is almost always more than outweighed by the savings in cost and labor associated to running physical cables, and in many cases physical cables are simply not practical.

What security will you require?

The type of access desired determines which WLAN security approach is appropriate.

Public access may call for no security, no Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), and Broadcast mode.

Telecommuters and small businesses often need basic security with Wi-Fi technology and static WEP of 40-bit or 128-bit.

Mid-market enterprises often require enhanced security with Dynamic Key Management System, mutual authentication, and 802.1x via Extensible Application Protocol (EAP).

Some mobile users and public access require specialized security with end-to-end security using virtual private networks (VPNs). We recommend you consult with us on your wireless network security requirements, to save you time, money and protect your business against security threats.
